T08.02 Megacities

Session: Megacities: Governance and informality

Chair(s): Frauke Kraas and Desheng Xue

Megacities as one of the most evident results of globalisation are dynamically developing. Not all of the multiple developing processes are taking place with proper planning. Rather are many of them taking place infor¬mally, particularly where they are not driven by governments but by other stakeholders, such as the private sector, civil society or social movements. The session will focus on the relationship between governance and informality as well as the multiple forms of informality, its functions and the types of interconnections.

Session: Megaities: Securing resources

Chair(s): Frauke Kraas and Günter Mertins

Abstract: Population and economies of megacities need a lot of resources, from energy, water and food to capital and human resources. Resources are important factors for the functioning of complex and dynamic megaurban systems. The paths of resource flows from their sources to their sinks and their role as interfaces of sub-systems are in the focus of the session.

Session: Megacities: Multiple risks and vulnerability

Chair(s): Frauke Kraas & Martin Coy

Abstract:
In the last few decades a striking worldwide trend towards rising fatalities and economic losses due to natural and human-made hazards in megacities can be observed. The session concentrates on major risks and vulnerability in megacities, wants to focus on multiple risks, including environmental risks (such as earthquakes and volcanic eruptions, storms, floods, droughts, heat waves, global sea-level rise) and human-made risks, such as air, water and soil pollution, industrial accidents, socio-economic risks as well as diseases and epidemics.
