The University of Cologne

The University of Cologne is an internationally oriented university with a long tradition and unbroken popularity among students. The University regularly occupies the top places in rankings of German and foreign universities. Roughly ten percent of the university’s students come from abroad, placing it among the top German universities in this respect. The continually rising numbers of foreign guest professors and scientists also confirms the drawing power of the University of Cologne.
While many other university foundations in late medieval Germany owe their establishment to major spiritual and temporal leaders, in Cologne it was the citizens who established the University. Thus the University of Cologne remains a municipal university in both senses: founded by the citizens of Cologne and centrally located in the heart of the urban area. .
