EM  01 - Natural and Anthropogenic Drivers of Land Degradation and Landscape Change within a Changing Environment: From the Alps to the lower Rhine

(Organised on behalf of the IGU Commission COMLAND)

The focus of the five day field trip includes comparison of natural with anthropogenic rates of sediment redistribution, soil erosion, land degradation styles, late Quaternary landscape evolution, and the design of effective management strategies within a changing environment. These topics are examined along a continuum of settings from the Alps to the lower Rhine within a “source-to-sink” framework. The field trip provides an overview of the impact of historic land degradation processes on soil quality, stratigraphy, and compares sediment fluxes in natural and coupled human-natural systems. The field trip occurs before the IGU Congress, with transportation to Cologne on 25th August, the day prior to the start of the Congress. Costs to include travel from Benediktbeuern to Cologne and accommodation in local hotels with regional cuisine.

  • Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Benediktbeuern; Lainbach catchment: Quantitative dimensions of geomorphic activity in an alpine setting; flash flooding, sediment budget, and geomorphic work in the geomorphologically most active German catchment.
  • Black Forest Mts., Odenwald Mts.: Pedostratigraphic impact of historic timber harvesting and agriculture in mountainous settings; gullying; sediment budgets of anthropogenic sediment flux
  • Muenzenberg (Wetterau loess basin): Sediment redistribution in long-cultivated basinal loess landscapes; sediment budget and geomorphic work for a period of 7000 years of cultivation, evolution of a anthropogenic soilscape pattern; implications for long term perspectives on soil erosion problems.
  • Lower River Rhine floodplain, Rhine delta, The Netherlands: Holocene evolution of the Rhine delta; Holocene sediment fluxes and sedimentation along the lower River Rhine, response to anthropogenetically increased sediment loads.
  • Rhine delta; transfer to Cologne: Late Holocene delta evolution and sediment budgets; integrated floodplain management for global environmental change scenarios.
