D 02 - Bonn – the history and future of the former capital of West Germany

This guided tour around the picturesque city of Bonn will provide an overview of the town’s historic development from the 17th century to the current day. The focus will be on Bonn’s role as “capital city”, the effects this status had on the urban development and the possible legacies of the governmental buildings and sites.

D 03 - National Park “Eifel” and the historical buildings of “Ordensburg Vogelsang”   

  • Burg Vogelsang: Guided tour of the castle and introduction to the history of the place, with a special focus on the use as elite school and cadre training academy by the national socialists in the 1930s and 1940s
  • History of the nature reserve “Eifel” with the option to have lunch (not included in fee) at the rustic restaurant “Adlerhof”
  • Walk to the deserted village of Wollseifen: history of the village and factors that led to its abandonment, general discussion of the changes which have occurred in the nature and landscape of the Eifel as a result of human interventions
  • Walk to the barrage and artificial water reservoir at Urfttalsperre:  water management in the Eifel
  • Trip by boat (ca. 45 minutes) to Einruhr: the advantages and risks of tourism for the National park Eifel
  • Optional “Kaffee & Kuchen” (following the German custom of having cake & coffee in the afternoon) at a local café and subsequent coach ride back to Cologne
