C08.08 Dynamics of Economic Spaces

Session: IGU Commission on the Dynamics of Economic Spaces: Emerging Economic Spaces

Chair(s): Neil Reid, Michael Taylor & Christine Tamasy

Abstract:
The proposed session addresses globalizing economic processes, localizing forces, and the practices of various actors in the production of emerging economic spaces. “Old” economic spaces are continuously being disrupted and “new” economic spaces are continuously being created, and both processes are, of course, never finished. Although there are clear elements of continuity of global economic patterns, significant spatial changes have occurred as well. Furthermore, the overall development trajectory of the world economy has become increasingly volatile, as the recent deep recession has just demonstrated. Understanding global changes is, therefore, definitely a spatialised and dynamic understanding of the economic linkages between the global and the local. The objective of the session is to better understand the most recent transformations and reconfigurations of economic spaces within the globalizing world economy. The session’s main focus is on emerging economic spaces and the practices that have affected the organization of economic activity and the nature of economic development.
