NEW: HD 13 - Art meets Nature in Cologne’s Green Belt: “Die Bundesrasenschau”

Cologne's Green Belt is the "green lung" of the city and unique in Europe in its quality. It is the embodiment of the visions of landscape architects in the 1920s. In Cologne two green belts were initially created, a third one is currently planned. Urban green spaces are a sustainable way to regulate the local climate: in the summer, the air above the green belt heats up less than the air above the built environment, providing cool air and ventilation. Furthermore, the green belt areas are also used by the citizens of Cologne for sports and recreational activities.

In 2010, the art project "Bundesrasenschau” (Federal Lawn show) created a continuous drawing of 7km length created with the use of a lawn-mower, connecting the various green spaces that form the green belt of Cologne.

The field trip will consist of a walk of 3km through the inner green belt, introducing the participants to this extraordinary space of “urban nature”.  The excursion lead by two experts in urban green spaces: artist Ralf Witthaus and green area expert Dr. Joachim Bauer from the office for landscaping and parks at the city of Cologne will demonstrate the unique potential of the green belt system.

 

HD 01 - From Rome to Prussia and what’s left of it: Historical and current urban developments in Cologne’s city centre 

This field trip will provide an overview of the history and the urban development of Cologne, covering the following topics: the foundation of Cologne and its development up to the end of the 19th century, reconstruction after WW2, processes of gentrification in “Neustadt”, the role of the retail industry.

HD 02 - Ethnic Diversity in Cologne – Between Multiculturalism and Parallel Society

With over 170,000 residents of non-German nationality from more than 100 different countries, Cologne is a multi-ethnic metropolis indeed. About a third of its one million inhabitants have what in German is called a “migration background”.
The excursion intends to give an impression of ethnic residential diversity, ethnic businesses and religious life in various quarters of Cologne.  Opportunities and difficulties regarding the migrants’ integration into German society will be discussed as well as ethnic conflict. One example will be the project of the Turkish community in Cologne to build a large mosque, which caused heated debates and controversies.

HD 06 - The history and changing faces of Cologne’s port “Rheinauhafen”

This field trip will address a showcase of waterfront development in Cologne’s centrally located port called “Rheinauhafen”. Topics will include the historic usage and role of the port, the planning process of the famous “Kranhäuser” (crane houses) and the implementation of the plans for the port’s revitalisation.  The field trip will end with a short presentation and a final round of discussion at the head office of  the port authority (Historisches Hafenamt).

HD 08 - Cologne – a cultural melting pot

This excursion seeks to explore historic and recent influences of immigrant groups, continuing to shape Cologne’s urban pattern to this date. Where did Cologne’s ethnic migrants come from? Where did they settle down? How did they develop ‘their’ city quarters with a multitude of distinctive practices and socio-economic patterns (i.e. niche economies and norms of social life)? Using the example of Turkish and Indian migrants the excursion intends to demonstrate the dynamic migrant networks and their influence on neighbourhood-development. A walk through the streets of Cologne on both banks of the Rhine river will introduce traceable elements of several stages of Cologne’s migration history.

HD  10 - World War II and Reconstruction as elements of urban development. The example of Cologne.

This field trip will focus on the destructions the city of Cologne suffered during WW2 and on the reconstruction in the post-war years. We will visit various sites in central Cologne and use these examples to demonstrate the enduring influence of the post-war reconstruction on the urban development of Cologne until the current day.
