Session: Human-Nature Interaction in Arid Lands and their Margins

Chair(s): Olaf Bubenzer & Mahmoud Ashour

Abstract:
Climate change, population growth and the increasing demand for resources, food and energy often induce land use change, migration, expansion of irrigated areas or increasing urbanization in many drylands worldwide. The open session of the IGU commission "Arid Lands, Humankind and Environment", in cooperation with the working group "Desert Margin Research" of the German Society for Geography (DGfG), invites both scientists who Associated processes such as soil degradation or even desertification and physical and economic water scarcity are common. Crossing certain biophysical thresholds could have serious consequences for humanity.
Papers which present transitions and tipping points in arid environmental systems and/or present comparative regional studies are particularly welcome.
