Session: "Society and Environment: conceptions and representations of nature(s) in the history of geography”

Abstract:
Along the lines of one of the four key topics proposed for the International Geographical Congress 2012, the IGU Commission on the History of Geography aims to organise a themed session on “Society and Environment: conceptions and representations of nature(s) in the history of geography”. Papers are welcome especially dealing with:
- Philosophical and scientific conceptions of nature within the history of geography;
- Man-nature relations;
- Geographical roots of nature conservation policies and the idea of sustainable development;
- Nature control, nature romance and the description of landscapes;
- "Nature" within different cultural, social and political environments;
-  The field and interaction of indigenous, popular and scientific geographical knowledge of nature;
- Representations of nature within literature and art in connection to geography.

We also welcome proposals of additional topics to be incorporated into the final program.
